I’m one of those people that just can’t wait to pack up my winter sweaters as soon as the calendar says spring. But in my haste, I always forget that there will be a few surprisingly chilly days as we transition to warmer weather. Over the years, I’ve learned how important it is to keep a layer of warmth with me at all times. The Daydream Shawl was inspired by those unpredictable days when you might need a little something extra to keep the chill away.
In designing the Daydream Shawl, I wanted to mimic the lovely knit-look texture I’ve been seeing in some of my favorite clothing stores. Instead of traditional crochet, I decided to use Tunisian crochet (TC) to build the stitch pattern I envisioned. The unique construction of TC allowed me to play around with dozens of stitches until I landed on the one that brought out the simple but eye-catching vibe I was going for. Now, we all know I’m a sucker for Lion Brand yarns. So many of my previous JOANN collaborations have included these staple yarns, including my Sweater Weather Cardi, Patchwork Kimono, and the Sweet Gingham Baby Blanket. But why, oh why, did I never do myself the favor of working with Lion Brand Heartland? The world may never know. But I’ve finally given Heartland a try and there’s no going back!
Not only is Lion Brand Heartland fantastically soft for a 100% acrylic yarn, but the entire color palette of earthy tones really speaks to me. For the Daydream Shawl, I used just over 3 balls of the Grand Canyon colorway. The heathered stone color is sure to match every outfit in my closet each season!

After making my first Daydream Shawl, I got so much inspiration to go stash diving and make this project in yarns that I already had on hand. If you want to use stash yarn for your project, be sure to make a gauge swatch and adjust your hook size as needed. Not all worsted weight yarns are made equally. You can also work this pattern in different yarn weights, colors, and striping patterns. It’s so versatile!

The Daydream Shawl is constructed with Tunisian crochet stitches from the bottom up. Increases at the beginning and end of each row make for a shallow and wide shawl. A combination of Tunisian simple stitch decreases and yarn overs produces a knit-like textured fabric that maintains a light airiness. MATERIALS:
- 3 balls Lion Brand Heartland in Grand Canyon colorway
- US Size L/11 8mm Tunisian crochet hook with cords measuring up to 40” (find my favorite corded Tunisian crochet hooks here!)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Hardcover book for making fringe
- Blocking board and pins for blocking
GAUGE:
4 inches square = 9 stitches x 13 rows
ABBREVIATIONS:
- Ch = chain
- RetP = Return Pass (See Pattern Notes)
- Tss= Tunisian simple stitch
- Tss2tog = Tunisian simple stitch 2 together (See Pattern Notes)
- Yo = Yarn over
NOTES:
- Numbers in parenthesis at the end of some rows indicates the total number of stitches in that row.
- The left side of your shawl may fan out more than the right side as you’re crocheting. This is normal. Plan to block your project after it is complete.
- Tunisian simple stitch two together (Tss2tog): insert hook under each of the next two stitches as for tss, yo, pull up a loop through both loops (decrease made)
- Traditional Return Pass (RetP): Follow the foundation row and each row with the Traditional Return Pass.
- Traditional Return Pass Instructions: Ch 1, *yarn over, pull through two loops; repeat from * until 1 loop remains on hook.

SHAWL PATTERN
Foundation: Ch 3, pull up a loop in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook and remaining ch, RetP. (3)
Row 1: (Yo, tss 1) 2 times, RetP. (5)
Row 2: (Yo, tss 1) 4 times, RetP. (9)

Row 3: Yo, tss 1, (yo, tss2tog) across row to last 3 sts (which are a tss, yo, and the edge stitch), (yo, tss 1) 3 times, RetP. (13)
Repeat Row 3 until shawl measures 65” along the top edge when slightly stretched.
FINISHING
Step 1: Loosely complete slip stitch bind off. (Learn the Tunisian crochet slip stitch bind off here!)
Step 2: Steam block as needed to achieve a triangle shape in the pattern dimensions. I steamed my full sized shawl three times, stretching the shawl and repositioning the blocking pins as needed. (Find my favorite steamer for blocking here!)

Step 3: Cut 14” lengths of yarn for fringe. Holding 3 lengths of yarn together, knot fringe into each edge stitch along bottom two sides of shawl. Steam and trim fringe as needed.
