Easy Project for Beginners
The Hexi Puff Coasters are a wonderful project for beginners to try. The pattern uses some basic stitches but helps beginners stretch their skills by adding the fun puff stitch, working the magic ring, and adding a border.
To make the Hexi Puff Coasters, you’ll start with a magic ring, which is a great technique to prevent holes in the center of your work when working in flat rounds. It can be a bit tricky to make at first, but it’s a must-have technique once you really get into crochet.
From there, puff stitches are strategically placed to make your coaster grow evenly. A single crochet border is worked around the entire piece, and you’ll finish with a handy hang tag so you can display these in your kitchen or dining room.
What’s the Perfect Yarn for Hexi Puff Coasters?
For such a simple, project, nearly any yarn goes. Since it’s springtime, I like to lighten things up, and CotLin from WeCrochet is the perfect lightweight yarn for the Hexi Puff Coasters.
CotLin is a DK weight blend of cotton and linen. Durable but soft, CotLin is a great choice for any home decor or summer garment projects. I don’t often reach for plant-based fibers in my crochet but CotLin is amazing to crochet with and comeS in a gorgeous range of colors.

If you happen to be stash busting (which I *highly* recommend), the Hexi Puff Coaster patterns lends itself to just about any yarn. For DK weight yarn, a 5mm hook is best. If you want to size up to worsted weight, try a 5.5mm or 6mm hook to keep the open-air feel of the original pattern.

MATERIALS:
- WeCrochet CotLin (DK weight), 1 ball. Samples made with the colors Lichen, Conch, Sagebrush, Flamingo, Harbor, and Mustard Seed.
- 5mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
FINISHED SIZE:
6.5″ across from point to point
ABBREVIATIONS:
Ch = chain
MR = magic ring
PuffSt = puffst (see Special Stitch)
RS = right side
Sc = single crochet
Sl st = slip stitch
Sp = space
WS = wrong side
SPECIAL STITCH:
Puff Stitch (puffst) – (yarn over, pull up a loop) 3x in same ch-sp, yarn over, pull through all loops on hook

ROUND 1 (RS): In MR, ch 1, (puffst, ch 1) 6 times, close ring, sl st in first puffst of round to join. (6 puffst)
ROUND 2: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (puffst, ch 2, puffst) in ch-1 sp, ch 1, [(puffst, ch 2, puffst) in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] around, sl st in first puffst of round to join. (12 puffst)
ROUND 3: Sl st in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, (puffst, ch 2, puffst) in ch-2 sp, ch 1, [puffst in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (puffst, ch 2, puffst) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1] around, puffst in last ch-1 sp, sl st in first puffst of round to join. (18 puffst)
ROUNDS 4-6: Sl st in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, (puffst, ch 2, puffst) in ch-2 sp, ch 1, [(puffst in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) to next ch-2 sp, (puffst, ch 2, puffst) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1] around, (puffst in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) to end of round, sl st in first puffst of round to join. (36 puffst)
ROUND 7 (border): Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in each st and sp around, placing 2 sc in each ch-2 sp, join with sl st in first sc of round, chain 7, turn work to WS facing, sl st in same st as join, ch 1, turn work to RS facing, work 15 sc around ch, sl st in same st as join. Fasten off.
