Beginner Tunisian Crochet Shawl
Learning any new skill can be daunting, but it’s not impossible! I learned the basics of Tunisian crochet during an impromptu lesson at a yarn convention. Maybe today is the day you learn!
Tunisian crochet is a hybrid of knitting and crochet. It creates a beautiful fabric and there are hundreds of stitches to learn. The Lamia Wrap allows you to master the basic technique while making a beautiful Tunisian crochet shawl.
Tunisian Crochet Shawl Yarns
I had the immense pleasure of working with Jake from Kenyarn to design the Lamia Wrap. Jake’s newest yarn base, Foggy Aran, combines merino wool and alpaca yarns with a bit of nylon to create a yarn that is delightfully soft. Foggy Aran is an aran weight yarn, meaning that it falls in category 4 with worsted weight yarn, but it is actually slightly heavier than a traditional worsted weight yarn. I used 3 skeins to make the Lamia Wrap. Browse the entire collection of Foggy Aran from Kenyarn HERE.
If you can’t get your hands on Foggy Aran, swap in any worsted weight yarn for this Tunisian crochet shawl. Experiment with a fiber that is new to you, or one that you’ve been eyeing for a while. The Lamia Wrap’s simple stitch pattern lends itself well to solid or tonal yarns, and a bit of animal fiber will help with the drape. Some personal favorites would be WeCrochet’s City Tweed Aran, Lion Brand’s Pound of Love, or Malabrigo Worsted.

MATERIALS
- Kenyarn Foggy Aran (category 4) aran weight yarn. 585 yards of the color “Three Sisters” was needed to complete the original sample (3 skeins).
- 6.5mm Tunisian crochet hook with 32″ cord (grab THIS set!)
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Blocking supplies
FINISHED SIZE
60″ wingspan x 27″ depth
GAUGE
4″ = 15 stitches x 12 rows in Tss pattern, unblocked
ABBREVIATIONS
- Ch = chain
- Lts = Last Tunisian Stitch
- Rep = repeat
- RetP = Return Pass
- Tps = Tunisian Purl Stitch
- Tss = Tunisian Simple Stitch
- Sl St = slip stitch
- St(s) = stitch(es)
- Yo = yarn over
SPECIAL STITCHES
–Last Tunisian Stitch (Lts): Insert hook under BOTH vertical bars of the last stitch and complete as for Tss.
–Return Pass (RetP): Ch 1, (yarn over, pull through the next 2 loops on hook) until 1 loop remains on hook.
–Honeycomb Pattern, ROW 1: (Tss 1, tps 1)
–Honeycomb Pattern, ROW 2: (Tps 1, tss 1)

Shawl Pattern
ROW 1: Ch 3, pull up a loop in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook and the following ch, RetP.
ROW 2: Tss 1, yo, Lts, RetP.
ROW 3: Tps 1, tss 1, yo, Lts, RetP.
ROW 4: Tss 1, tps 1, tss 1, yo, Lts, RetP.
ROW 5: (Tps 1, tss 1) 2 times, yo, Lts, RetP.
ROW 6: (Tss 1, tps 1) 2 times, tss 1, yo, Lts, RetP.
ROW 7: (Tps 1, tss 1) to last st, yo, Lts, RetP.
ROW 8: (Tss 1, tps 1) to last 2 sts, tss 1, yo, Lts, RetP.
ROWS 9-13: Rep Rows 7-8 2 times, THEN rep Row 7 once more.
ROW 14: Work Honeycomb Pattern, ROW 1 for 13 sts, tss each st to last st, yo, Lts, RetP.
ROW 15: Work Honeycomb Pattern, ROW 2 for 13 sts, tss each st to last st, yo, Lts, RetP.
ROWS 16-117: Rep Rows 14-15. Shawl should be about 42” when measured from Row 1 to Row 117 along the straight edge (not the increase edge).
ROW 118: Work Honeycomb Pattern, ROW 1 to last 2 sts, tss 1, yo, Lts, RetP.
ROW 119: Work Honeycomb Pattern, ROW 2 to last 2 sts, tss 1, yo, Lts, RetP.
ROWS 120-127: Rep Rows 118-119.
Sl st bind off in Honeycomb pattern. Weave in all ends. Wet block to finished measurements.
