Blog Covers for Stitches

Have you always liked the sleek look of knit stitches, but prefer one hook to two sticks? Never fear – I’ve got another crochet stitch that your friends will swear is knitting. It’s called the Tunisian Crochet Rib Stitch, and you can also find it called the Saloniki Stitch. Whatever you call it, I’m sold! I can’t wait to share this with you in my written pattern and helpful tutorial video.

Fool your Favorite Knitters with the Tunisian Crochet Rib Stitch

Never has a stitch made me fall in love as quickly as this Tunisian crochet Rib Stitch. The texture is out of this world, and you can’t tell me you didn’t think this was knitting at first. I showed a swatch to my Momma Gwen, who has been knitting for nearly 50 years, and even SHE WAS FOOLED! I love that Tunisian crochet helps us create smooth textures and interesting stitches that we couldn’t dream of in traditional crochet. The Tunisian crochet Rib Stitch is shooting to the top of my favorites list.

Listen, crochet bestie. Let’s not get too excited here. While I do consider the Rib Stitch to be easy, I wouldn’t classify it as a beginner stitch. You absolutely need to know the Tunisian simple and full stitches. Then, you’ll want to pay close attention to hook placement and the special Return Pass we’ll be doing. Don’t worry – you can definitely do this. You’ll just need to focus to ensure you achieve this beautiful texture. My step-by-step tutorial video will help.

INSTRUCTIONS

ROW 1 With A, ch 36, pull up a lp in the back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook and each rem ch, yo, pull through 1 lp, (yo, pull through 2 lps) until 1 lp remains on hook.

ROW 2 (Tss 1, tfs 2) to last st, Lts, RetP as noted in Special Stitches.

Rep Row 2 until square measures 11.5″, changing color every 3 rows between A and D, and ending on the 2nd row of a color repeat. This took me 32 rows and I ended with Color A on my hook. Fasten off the color no longer in use and proceed to Bind Off with attached color.

STANDARD BORDER

  • Change to 6.5mm traditional crochet hook and ensure the square faces right side up.
  • Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the first edge of the square, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
  • Single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the edge, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
  • Repeat the last step for the remaining 2 sides. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round. Fasten off and block your finished square to 12″ x 12″.
