Zippered Puffy Stitch Square Pattern

MATERIALS
- Worsted weight yarn – colors A, C, and D
- 6.5mm crochet hook
- 6.5mm corded Tunisian crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
FINISHED SIZE
12″ square after border and blocking
STITCH MULTIPLE: The Zippered Puffy Stitch is worked over any even number of chains. Adjust as needed.
SPECIAL STITCHES
- Last Tunisian Stitch (Lts): insert hook under BOTH vertical bars of the last stitch, yo, pull up a lp.
- Puff Stitch (puffst): [Pull up a tall loop, (yarn over, pull up a tall loop) 2 times] in the next space (5 loops on hook per puff stitch). For Rows 3 and beyond, be sure to grab the top bar of the puff stitch below the space when creating new puff stitches.
- Return Pass (RetP): Ch 1, (yo, pull through 2 lps) until 1 lp remains on hook.
PATTERN NOTES:
- Change color every row – leave colors not in use attached and carry yarns up the side of the work.
- This stitch uses a unique Return Pass beyond Row 1, which is outlined in each row.
- Practice very loose tension with this stitch, and be sure to pull up tall loops when instructed.

INSTRUCTIONS
ROW 1 With A, ch 30, pull up a lp in the back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook and each rem ch, RetP.
ROW 2 Ch 1, puffst in sp between 1st and 2nd st (sk next sp, puffst in next sp) across row, placing the last puffst in the sp between the last 2 sts (15 puffsts), Lts, ch 2, (yo, pull through 6 lps, yo, pul through 1 lp) until 2 lps rem on hook, yo with C, pull through last 2 lps on hook.
ROW 3 Ch 2, puffst in sp between 1st and 2nd puffst, (sk next puffst, puffst in next sp) across row, placing the last puffst in the sp between the last 2 puffsts (14 puffsts), sk next puffst, Lts, ch 2, (yo, pull through 6 lps, yo,, pull through 1 lp) until 2 lps remain on hook, yo, pull through 1 lp, yo with D, pull through last 2 lps on hook.
ROW 4 Ch 1, puffst in sp before first puff st, (sk next puffst, puffst in next sp) across row, placing the last puffst in the sp after last puffst, Lts, ch 1, (yo, pull through 6 lps, yo, pull through 1 lp) until 2 lps rem on hook, yo with A, pull through last 2 lps on hook.
Rep Rows 3-4 until square measures 11.5″, rotating colors A, C, and D, ending with a Row 4 repeat. This took me 30 rows. The color of your last row will be used in the Bind Off – fasten off all other colors.
BIND OFF Ch 1, sl st in the top bar of the next puffst, (sc in the top bar of the next sp, sl st in the top bar of the next puffst) across row to last st, sl st last st as for Lts. Proceed to Standard Border.
STANDARD BORDER
- Change to 6.5mm traditional crochet hook and ensure the square faces right side up.
- Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the first edge of the square, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
- Single crochet 35 stitches evenly across the edge, placing increases and decreases where needed. At corner, ch 2 and rotate to work along the next edge.
- Repeat the last step for the remaining 2 sides. At the end of the round, join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet of the round. Fasten off and block your finished square to 12″ x 12″.
