The Best Cotton for Crochet Dishcloths
Cotton is obviously the best choice for washcloths. It’s absorbent, inexpensive, and easy to find in lots of different colors. Every year there are new yarns added to craft stores and yarn shops, making the choice for the perfect yarn all that much more difficult. So, what is the best cotton for your crochet dishcloth?

I’ve become quite partial to Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton for my crochet dishcloth projects. 24/7 Cotton first debuted in 2016 and has been used for everything from home decor to clothing and accessories ever since. This yarn comes in lots of gorgeous, rich colors and is available from many of my favorite retailers like JOANN, Amazon, and on the Lion Brand Website.
What makes 24/7 Cotton ideal for crochet dishcloths is that this yarn is mercerized. The mercerization process adds a barely perceptible coating to the yarn, adding sheen and a barrier from moisture. When it comes to dishcloths, mercerized cotton is better for exfoliation, it won’t take on water like regular cotton yarn, and it’ll hold its color much better than traditional cotton, which is known to fade over time.

Half Moon Washcloth Pattern
Let’s make the Half Moon Washcloth together! Follow along in this video:
ROW 1: Ch 33 (or any multiple of 3), sc in 2nd ch from hook, sk 1 ch, (3sc, sk 2 chs) to last 2 chs, sk 1 ch, sc in last ch, turn.
ROW 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sk 1 st, 3sc, (sk 2 sts, 3sc) to last 2 sts, sk 1 st, sc in last st, turn.
Repeat Row 2 to 7.5″. This took me to 25 total rows. It is likely that your crochet fabric will shrink slightly, that is why I measured to 7.5″ while crocheting, but my cloth measures only 7.25″ square after finishing.
ADDING THE LOOP: After completing the last row, ch 8, turn your work, sl st in the first sc. Fasten off.
FINISHING: Weave in all ends. Steam or spray block to 7.25″-7.5″. Need help with blocking? Learn more in this post!
